our story
One day, back in 2018, we found a YouTube video that inspired the next chapter of our lives. Jeff found a video of a man who lived out of his van, working and traveling around the United States, which triggered months of nightly YouTube binging and dreaming about how we could make it work.
By January 2019, we decided it was now or never. Jeff was almost 27 years deep at a job where he worked six-day workweeks, mostly 10-12-hour days, and needed a change. Sara had a remote job that could go anywhere.
We started the process of getting rid of 90% of our possessions over the coming months. We had garage sales, donated items, and burned some things. In August, we put our house on the market and accepted an offer within eight hours. By the end of September, we closed on the house, bought a truck, moved in with Sara’s parents, and waited for the RV that we ordered.
Three days before Christmas, 2019, we picked up the RV and parked at Cowan Lake State Park in southwestern Ohio. We spent the next month moving into the RV, tying up loose ends in Ohio, and preparing for nomadic life. Jeff retired from his 27-year career, and we hit the road on January 31, 2020.
Since then, we have traveled in 24 states from the Florida Keys to the coast of California. We have workcamped at three different campgrounds, a ranch in Texas, and a boat and RV storage facility. Our “home base” for the time being is a campground that we manage in Colorado.
In 2024, we added a 2004 Jeep Wrangler LJ to our family so that we could have more backcountry and tent camping adventures. In 2026, we are adding an adventure trailer build to the family. Stay tuned!
